Open WOrship
Friends sit in silence waiting on the movement of the Spirit in what is called open worship or also waiting worship. While there is an expectation that one may receive a “leading” ( something specific we are inspired to do) or a “message” (something said to us or we are inspired to say) , this is not something that happens every time. A leading may be a specific thing to do. A message could be just about anything. It is important to discern whether what one hears comes from the Spirit or just one’s own thoughts. Even when one does receive a leading or a message, one must first ask before sharing is this just for me or is this for the meeting as a whole? Only when one has discerned that it is for the wider group does one speak.
Semi-Programmed Worship
If you’re not familiar with Quakerism, this is going to feel more familiar. This includes a variety of elements such as songs, readings, preaching and also a period of open worship for a smaller part of the service.
